Govt Central Textile Institute, Kanpur is a premier textile institute of North India. It made a modest start in 1914. However in 1937, Govt. Central Textile Institute came into existence in its present form by merger of two premier textile institute i.e. one at Kanpur and the other at Roorkee i.e. Deptt. of Textile Technology, Thomson Civil Engineering College of Roorkee and two diploma programme were started in

Chemical Technology

In the year 1959-60 four year degree programmes in Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry were started. Initially the Institute was affiliated to Agra University but on establishment of the University in Kanpur in the year 1966 it got affiliated to Kanpur university. In the year 1976-77 the institute pioneered in starting a four year degree programme in Manmade Fibre technology. In 1985 the three year diploma Programmes were shifted to governement Polytechnic Kanpur and thereafter the institute has been running Graduate and postgraduate Programmers with Ph.D. research facilities.

"All work and no play" is unthinkable even for those pursuing technical course requiring long working hours in college and at home. In spite of the hectic schedule, the students are quite conscious of the importance of co-curricular and extra curricular activities participating in sports and games etc.

The institute offers four year B.Tech. program to which admissions are made t hrough the combined entrance examinations UPSEAT, conducted on an all India level. The institute also has an M.Tech. programme in textile tech discipline. This is open to students with B.Tech. Degree in TT or MMFT and a valid GATE score, how ever few seats in the programme are open to the candidates sponsored by the employers. Candidate with M.Tech degree can proceed to PhD in their area of interest on being selected by approved reasearch guide. Few seats in B.Tech programs are open for admissions on the basses of reservation by the central government.

The college offers various types of scholarships to its students these are awarded on the bases of the merit, means Full scholarships. Half scholarships and assistance for purchasing books and instruments are given to students depending on there performance and needs as well as the purpose indicated by (government/donors) etc.
