About the institute:
On August 12, 1956 a long held dream of many prominent personalities (including the then chief minister of Orissa, Mr. Biju Patnaik) was fulfilled, just after 2 years of establishment of the IIT in Kharagpur. UCE started with three departments - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. At that time the current building was not finished so the college started in a building now known as the "Bharati Club" and students lived in quarters of the Hirakud Dam project. This technical institute has graduated more than 16,000 engineers placed in organizations (such as NASA, GM, DRDO, Microsoft, Airbus, NALCO, GE, HAL [disambiguation needed]), and in institutions (like MIT, Wharton, Stanford University, IIT
Infrastructure:
  • Located at the foothills of the Hirakud Dam, Asia's longest earthen dam, Veer Surendra Sai University is a few kilometers away from the intersection points of NH-06 and NH-42. The campus covers and area of 200 acres (0.81 km2) amidst the hills and the river Mahanadi. The one way access route from NH-06 stretches up to the "Golden Jubilee" gate at the entrance of college.
  • To the left of the gate stands the college library, the oldest and the largest technical library in Orissa, while to the other side there is the college auditorium, again only one of its kind in the State. The campus encompasses department buildings, the Administrative Block, a workshop, one central internet facility and a number of laboratories. With its emphasis on physical education, the college has a gymnasium and a Yoga Center for its students. The campus has a playground, and one court each for basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton.
